Pilates is a physical fitness system developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates to help build long, lean muscles, increase flexibility, strength and endurance. It puts emphasis on spinal and pelvic alignment as well as breathing to relieve stress and allow adequate oxygen flow to muscles. It can be effective in rehabilitation assisting individuals to complete movements successfully, aiding safe recovery. Equipment can also provide resistance and therefore challenge highly trained individuals.
